CALIBRATION: Advanced Issues & Concepts

Description

This is an advanced seminar in which the most complex issues involved in the calibration process are examined.

As you begin to setup a calibration management system, there are many things that must be considered:
  • How often should each gage/instrument be calibrated and under what circumstances should the interval be adjusted?

  • What type of work instructions are necessary to ensure that the gage/instrument is properly calibrated?

Another perplexing dilemma has to do with using outside calibration labs or setting up an in-house metrology department or both. If the decision is to do the calibration in-house:.

  • What types of environmental controls need to be implemented to ensure accuracy?

  • What equipment is needed to perform the calibrations?

The use of outside labs has its own set of problems centering around control and documentation.

During the calibration process, the issues of uncertainty, out-of-tolerance conditions and traceability must be addressed.

If the company is going for certification to any of the industry standards, like ISO 9001, ISO 14001, AS9100, ISO 17025, ISO 13485, and ISO/TS 16949 the following questions concerning an audit may arise:

  • How do you prepare for an audit?

  • How do you conduct internal audits and pre-assessments in preparation for the certification audit?

  • What are the requirements to keep the certification once it is received?
